Psmith

However gloomy I may be feeling, regardless of the reason, P. G. Wodehouse's glittering dialogue always cheers me up. Sometimes, however, a line is particularly resonant. I have a poor memory*, so the following lines made me chortle even more than normal.

"One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day - I cannot recall for the moment how many - made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory. However, there you are. I've given you the main idea of the thing; and a German doctor says that early rising causes insanity."

* My memory for some things is so poor that I can re-read detective fiction and still take a pleasant interest in the whodunnit? aspect. I think it must compensate for a ridiculous degree of retention of obscure computing facts.
